Implant Supported Dentures

Many patients have had shrinkage of the gums and bone resporption which leads to the dentures not staying in place. Basically there is insufficient structure of the mouth to support the dentures. Therefore, implants will be the best options in this case. We will recommend a dental surgeon who will consult and discuss the procedures for implants. Once the implants are placed, healing is critical in having the implant integrate into the jaw bone.

So many patients that have had the implants placed have said that they should have done it sooner! They absolutely love the fit and look of the implant dentures!

Lower dentures are frequently more difficult to wear, as there is no suction to help secure the denture into place. Patients typically have to hold it into place with their cheek and tongue in order to keep it from shifting too much. Or they have to use denture adhesives which can be a nuisance to constantly have to apply, not to mention that it can be messy. Implant removeable dentures that are attached to the dental implants are a more reliable and cost effective solution in the long term.

Benefits of Implant Dentures

  • Denture does not move while eating
  • More aesthetically pleasing (natural looking)
  • Confidence in talking and eating
  • No material in the palate (allows tongue to tissue contact)

Partial Dentures

A partial denture is a removable prosthetic device used to replace one or more missing teeth. It is an important step in developing an attractive smile and restoring function to where missing teeth once were.

When teeth are missing, a persons bite can be affected making chewing difficult or uncomfortable. There is also a tendency for adjacent teeth to drift into the space left by the mission tooth. More problems will develop when this happens. Missing teeth can impair your speech as well as create other tooth issues. It is extremely important to see your dentist for x-rays and approval for a partial denture as the remaining teeth need to be strong enough to withstand the forces of a partial denture. All restorations need to be done by the dentist prior to impressions.

Cast Partial
Cast Partial Dentures are made out of Chromium Cobalt. A metal framework that’s designed to accurately fit around your natural teeth and gums.

Duraflex Partial
These partials have no metal and are made of thermoplastic material The material engages the abutment teeth for retention and flexes into place. For patients that do not want metal in their mouth or have sensitive teeth, then this would be a good option.

Flippers
This is a common name for a one tooth partial that replaces one or more front teeth. It is more of a temporary solution while the patient waits for a more permanent solution.

The reason for their name is because if you bite with it in the front, it normally will flip out of place.

Immediate Dentures

When natural teeth can no longer be saved and extractions are required, this denture is placed into the mouth immediately after the extractions are completed.

In most cases, an immediate denture is the first full or partial denture a patient will receive. Immediate dentures are fabricated to replace the loss of natural teeth and inserted immediately after the removal of the natural teeth by the dentist. Naturally, any loss of your natural teeth is bothersome, but it happens to many of us. Fortunately, dentures have come a long way in the past 2 or 3 decades.

With immediate dentures, we are able to record your existing bite and redesign your new smile through a tooth selection process, and using the natural contours of your mouth to find the best fit possible.

Benefits of Immediate Dentures

  • The patient can usually carry on daily obligations without interruption
  • Immediate dentures control bleeding and swelling and act as a splint
  • Protect the gum ndges from trauma and outside sources of debris
  • Allows the patient to adapt to the new dentures while healing is taking place with marginal discomfort

Although the advantages of immediate dentures exceed the disadvantages one cannot overlook these primary disadvantages:

  • More office visits are required for adjustments, especially during the first few weeks after insertion
  • There is no opportunity to observe the appearance of the denture before insertion, therefore the denture cannot be fully assessed until insertion is complete, sometimes resulting in less favourable results.

Denture Relines & Repairs

Your tissue and bone in your mouth shrink with time so when that happens, your denture nerds to be refitted to make it fit tight again. Usually every 2 years this procedure is necessary to have a comfortable fitting denture again.

Noticeable symptoms that you need a reline:

  • Less stability when chewing
  • Food getting underneath your denture
  • More frequent sore spots

These are common indications that a lot of change has taken place in your mouth.

This is a one day process. You will be without your denture for approximately 5 hours.

Soft Liners – Moloplast B
These liners provide more comfort for patients with a very shallow or flat ridge. It acts as a shock absorber and increases fit and patient comfort dramatically. Average lifespan of this liner 1s 2 – 5 years and can be placed in a new or existing denture.

Repairs
Usually done in the same day, basically any denture can be repaired. The denturist will assess the damage and let you know how long it will take to repair.

Denture Enhancements

Adding a diamond in your denture tooth, name in denture, etc.

Name in Denture
Names in dentures are placed mostly in patients who live in the senior lodges.  Sometimes here they can get misplaced or tangled up in laundry.  Staff will easily see who the denture belongs to and return it to that person.  Names in dentures could also benefit you if you will be having surgery or will be staying in the hospital for a long period.  Gives you peace of mind that your dentures will be returned to you if lost or misplaced by staff.

Professional Denture Cleaning

Dentures form plaque and tartar build up just like natural teeth.

Once plaque hardens into tartar, it can be a place where bacteria can build up and cause bad breath and tissue irritation.

You should never attempt to remove the tartar off your denture by scraping the denture. This can cause significant scratches to the denture surface.

The denturist will use a professional strength denture cleanser and may need to use rotary tools to grind off the tartar build up then buff and polish the denture to a sparkly shine.

Velescope Oral Screening

  • Traditional oral mucosal examination relies on reflected light to visualize the oral cavity.
  • The VELscope allows the direct visualization of tissue fluorescence which complements and expands upon the view obtained by reflected light.
  • Using these different visualization methods together provides an enhanced examination that decreases the likelihood of overlooking possibly serious pathology.

Natural tissue fluorescence is caused by “fluorophores” that, when excited by light of an appropriate wavelength (e.g. blue) will emit their own light at a longer wavelength (e.g. green). The resulting fluorescence reveals information about cellular, structural, and/or metabolic activity changes that can be directly related to disease processes occurring inside the tissue.

The VELscope system is a powerful, fluorescence-based device that enhances the visualization of oral mucosal abnormalities such as oral cancer and premalignant dysplasia. Unlike other adjunctive devices used by dentists, the VELscope system does not require any dyes or prolonged testing procedures.

In fact, VELscope examinations can be performed in the denturists office during routine oral general exams.
